Transport Minister unable to intervene in taxi fare increase

Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan has responded to calls from the public for him to intervene in some way in the 36 percent price hike implemented by the Port of Spain to Chaguanas taxi drivers.

Responding to callers on Boom Champions 94.1 FM this morning, Minister Sinanan explained that the Government is unable to dictate the prices which taxi drivers can charge.

However, he is urging drivers to keep their price increases minimal.

Minister Sinanan noted that the only option available to the Government is to provide an alternative mode of transportation which it is already doing.

He added that he is able however to see both sides of the coin as just as the Government cannot intervene in taxi fares, it also cannot intervene in the price of car parts and the other costs facing drivers.
