Transgender Rikers Island inmate sentenced to seven years for raping a female inmate

A transgender Rikers Island inmate has been sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a fellow female prisoner.

Ramel Blount, who goes by Diamond Blount, was born a male. However, since identifying as a woman, Blount was housed in the female unit of the notorious jail, which has been plagued by violence in recent months.

Authorities say that on February 8th, 2021, Blount approached a 33-year-old cis-gendered female inmate in the bathroom as she was exiting the shower.

Blount attacked the woman, holding her down by the back of her neck and raping her.

The victim notified jail staff, and a rape kit was performed, which confirmed the assault occurred.

Blount accepted a plea deal that sentenced them to a seven-year prison sentence and eight years of post-release supervision.

Blount must also register as a sex offender.
