Tobago prison on lockdown as prisoner tests positive for Covid19

A prisoner at the Tobago Convict Prison in Scarborough has tested positive for Covid19.

Country Medical Officer Dr Tiffany Hoyte, said the inmate received the result on Tuesday and that the prison was immediately placed on lockdown.

Dr Hoyte made the announcement during the Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development press conference yesterday.

She said the prisoner became ill at the Prison in Scarborough and was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital, where he was swabbed.
Prison officers and inmates are being tested.

Dr Hoyte acknowledged the situation at the Tobago prison is “not ideal,” as there is overcrowding from time to time.

She said they have proactively started at looking at solving this.

She said there are 45 inmates at the facility and “although they have been in separate cells, in groups, we are treating as one and we are therefore investigating everyone.” Contract tracing is being done for the inmates and prison officers.”
