A 41-year-old Tobago man was ordered to stay 150 feet away from his 17-year-old stepdaughter after appearing before a Scarborough Magistrate charged with cruelty to a child.
The accused was given the order as part of his bail conditions by Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor when he appeared before the court on March 29th to answer to the charge. He was granted bail with a surety in the amount of $50,000.
The matter was adjourned to April 26th, 2021.
The suspect was charged on March 27th by PC Mitchell of the Tobago Division Child Protection Unit (CPU), following a report made to police by a girl that on March 24th her stepfather allegedly physically assaulted her.
An investigation was initiated by PC Mitchell who discovered that the girl appeared to have been dealt several blows about her body.
According to the girl’s account, the accused slammed her to the ground, kicked and cuffed her in the stomach, choked and dragged her, causing injury to her neck, back and left hand. After further investigations, the CPU officers arrested the man and later charged him with one count of cruelty to a child.
Enquires into this case was spearheaded by Sgt Miller of the Tobago CPU.
