Three-year MIC Apprenticeship Programme to cost $32M

Cabinet has approved the creation of a three-year Apprenticeship Programme for individuals 17–25 years old, which will prepare them for jobs within the manufacturing sector.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Paula Gopee-Scoon made the announcement at the Post-Cabinet Media Briefing held at the Diplomatic Centre, St. Ann’s on Thursday 31st March, 2022.

The MIC Institute of Technology Apprenticeship Programme will be administered in two phases: In phase one, students will be trained across four operational areas including Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical, Electronics Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology and Mechatronics.

In phase two, the trainees will be required to choose one of the four disciplines for specialisation and placed at an industry partner site for on the job training.

Students will be paid a monthly stipend of $3000.

Minister Gopee-Scoon said, “The non-energy manufacturing sector in Trinidad and Tobago remains an important and dynamic sector in the economy and it is a catalyst for achieving economic transformation and basic diversification.”

The Minister also highlighted that phase two of the Roadmap to Recovery report identified that “in order to grow and develop a non-energy manufacturing sector, there is a requirement to build the human resource capacity within the sector.”

The Minister of Trade and Industry said the programme will be launched within the next eight weeks at a cost of $32 million.
