There Are Conditions Under Which Tax Payers Cannot Be Penalised For Property Tax Payment

Should the Board of Inland Revenue be unable to deliver a tax assessment notice to a tax payer, then the person is not at fault and will not be subject to any penalties and interests relating to  property tax payment.

This is the legal option being put forward according to Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert, in response to a question posed by Independent Senator, Sunity Maharaj, on Tuesday in the Senate.

Maharaj wanted to find out in light of taxpayer confusion surrounding the payment of Property Tax, can the Minister indicate whether the September 30th deadline applies to home-owners who have not yet received their notice of property tax assessment.

Imbert explained the rate of property tax for residential properties was reduced to two percent, so should someone receive an assessment using the old rate of three percent it is invalid.
