The European Union Proposes New Sanctions On Russia

The European Union has unveiled proposals for new sanctions on Russia including a total ban on Russian oil imports by the end of the year.

The plans – which need member states’ approval – also include sanctions on individuals, including those suspected of war crimes.

Hungary says it will veto the plan in its current form.

It says it would destroy the country’s economy.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol says contact has been lost with fighters inside a vast steelworks.

At least two hundred Ukrainian civilians are thought to remain trapped at the site.
