The 2020 Great Race is on

The 2020 Great Race is currently underway.

Trinidad and Tobago Powerboat Association (TTPBA) said that 26 boats have registered for the annual event, which takes competitors from Trinidad to Tobago.

Five are registered from Tobago with no international competitors this year.

Pre-Covid-19 many supporters and well-wishers would have gathered along the Western Main Road in Chaguaramas in Trinidad and in Store Bay Tobago to send off or greet their boat of choice.

But with the Covid-19 regulations, the celebration has been pared down.

There will be no spectators allowed at any of the usual viewing points, and racing teams will not dock in Tobago, but return to Trinidad after a rest period.

TTPBA President Marcus Gomez had said that because this is a no-contact sport, the 12th man isn’t needed in the event.

He added that he was happy that the teams were still able to race despite the restrictions as a result of Covid.

The event began outside Caster’s Cove in Chaguaramas. The first event of the day was the 60-mile race.

Top names such as defending champions Timeless, Soul Rebel, Powered by God, Limitless, Matrix, High Grade, and Trident will vie for this year’s trophy in the 60-mile division.
