The Tobago House of Assembly’s legislation does not allow for the setting up of a THA police force.
This is according to Chairman of the Tobago Business Chamber and Attorney, Martin George.
He made the comments in a video message on Tuesday as he responded to the idea of the THA police force as suggested by Chief Secretary Farley Augustine made at a news briefing on May 17th.
Augustine said a THA police force will be a major component of a Department of Public Safety which the assembly is establishing, to work alongside the police to try and arrest the island’s worsening violent crime situation.
However, George based his remarks on what is stated in the THA Act which governs the Assembly’s operations.
George suggested steps which can be taken in a draft bill in a bid to get it to the parliament for approval.
