Temporary suspension of Pfizer shots; unused batch to be incinerated

From Tuesday, March 1st, there will be a temporary suspension of the administration of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines, pending the arrival of a new batch of Pfizer vaccines in the coming week.

According to a release from the Ministry of Health today, this has become necessary as the current stock of Pfizer expires on Monday 28th February.

Vaccines by Sinopharm and Johnson and Johnson will continue to be administered.

Members of the public who are 18 years of age and older and are not pregnant, can continue to access both the Sinopharm and J&J vaccines at all designated vaccination locations for 1st and 2nd and booster doses. It should be noted that any Covid-19 vaccine which has received World Health Organisation approval may be used as a booster for ay other approved Covid-19 vaccine.

At Saturday’s MOH media briefing, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said a shipment of 75,000 new Pfizer vaccines is expected sometime next week.

Mr Deyalsingh assured that all the Health Centres and RHAs have been alerted about the decision.

He noted that the expired shots will be burned and not publicly dumped.
