Teen arrested for kidnapping, robbery of 70 year-old

A teenager was among two persons arrested in connection with the kidnapping and robbery of a 70-year-old woman. The senior citizen was rescued by officers of the South Western Division (SWD) soon after she was captured last night.

Around 8 o’clock, officers of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) received information that a kidnapping and robbery was taking place in the Clifton Hill, Point Fortin area.

The victim told police that she had just arrived at her home when she was confronted by six men who took her inside the house and demanded cash and jewellery. The men then tied her up and threatened to kill her, before placing her in her BMW motor vehicle and driving off.

Officers spotted the white BMW X-5 belonging to the victim soon after, proceeding at a high speed along Canaan Road, Point Fortin and gave chase. The vehicle subsequently crashed into a street sign in the Mahaica district.

Six male suspects exited the vehicle and escaped into some nearby bushes.  However, the 17-year-old from Couva was apprehended by officers. Cash and jewellery were found in his possession.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers found the victim who was bound and blindfolded. She was taken to the Point Fortin Area Hospital for treatment.

A second suspect, a 27-year-old of Point Fortin, was arrested following inquiries by officers in the district. He was found with the keys to BMW and another motor vehicle, a Toyota, in his possession.

Officers of the SORT, SWD Task Force, SWD Emergency Response Patrol, Point Fortin Criminal Investigations Department, and Municipal Police are continuing investigations.
