Suspect in Prison Officer shooting held at hospital with gunshot wound

A man believed to be one of the main suspects in the shooting of a Prison Officer’s home in Tunapuna last night is now warded at hospital under police guard.

Reports indicate the female prison officer was at home around 7.30 pm when several men in a car pulled up outside the premises and began shooting.

A police officer who runs a small parlour to the front of the property drew his licensed pistol and returned fire, forcing the men to flee.

The officer received an injury to his hand during the incident and was taken to hospital where he was treated.

Police responding to the scene found two pistols and two extended magazines nearby which they believe the attackers used.

Later that evening, a man they suspect was one of the gunmen was held at the Arima Hospital while being treated for gunshot wounds.

The suspect is now said to be warded at the Eric Williams Medical Centre under police guard with a gunshot wound to his back.

Reports say a bullet is lodged in his spine.

The suspect has been named on social media but we will not divulge the name as the individual has not been charged.
