Supermarkets “locking up” cheese after increased reports of shoplifting

Shoplifting is now a major issue facing supermarkets in Trinidad and Tobago.

So says supermarket association President Rajiv Diptee.

His comments come after National Security Minister, Fitzgerald Hinds, revealed that there have been increased instances of shoplifting.

Speaking on Power 102 Digital’s Power Breakfast Show he said supermarkets are now forced to place basic items such as cheese and toothpaste under lock and key.

Mr Diptee claimed that other issues facing supermarket owners in the clampdown against the crime are antiquated laws and a slow judicial system.

These issues, he claimed, discouraged supermarket owners from pursuing the matter.

Speaking in yesterday’s Senate sitting, Minister Hinds revealed that several measures are now in effect by the Police Service in a bid to address the uptick in the crime.

This he said includes enhanced stake holder relationship with the Supermarket Association, the use of private security, town meetings and stop and search exercises.
