Supermarkets anticipating large crowds as weekend shopping curtailed by curfews

With Supermarkets across the country set to be closed for the next two days as a result of curfews being imposed on the Labour Day holiday, Saturday and Father’s Day on Sunday, citizens have been rushing to stock up on their grocery supplies.

In an interview, President of the Supermarket Association (SATT) Rajiv Diptee, said this rush was anticipated and they expect more today.

He said “I believe it was ill-conceived…we should have allowed normal shopping to continue because these things…it’s very characteristic of Trinidadians and even Tobagonians, where we say these curfews’ implementations coming into force, where they tend to rush the stores.”
Diptee is pleading with customers to not crowd the stores today.

GML reported long lines outside Tru Valu’s Long Circular Mall, Massy Stores’ Maraval and even filled carparks at the popular pharmacies SuperPharm and Starlite.
