Super Mario Bros movie breaks records, beats Frozen and defies critics

The new Super Mario Bros Movie has broken box office records for an animated film.

The movie version the hit Nintendo game has achieved the most successful global opening of all time for an animated movie, best-ever opening for a movie based on a video game and the top opening of 2023 so far.

The family film scored $377m around the world in its first five days on release.

That overtook the previous record of $358m (£288m) held by Frozen 2.

In The Super Mario Bros Movie, Chris Pratt voices Mari while Jack Black plays fire-breathing villain Bowser.

The figures defy critics, many of whom said had little good to say about the movie referring to it as “a soulless ploy to sell…merchandise”, “tedious and flat” and “a disappointment”.

Fans however seem to disagree, as while critics give the film 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it received a 96% audience score.

This has even led controversial Twitter owner and tech billionaire, Elon Musk, to tweet that “the critics are so disconnected from reality!”
