Stricter measures needed to curb COVID surge – says UWI Virologist

Virology professor at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Dr Christopher Oura, is of the view that further restrictions should be imposed to curb the current spike in COVID19 cases.

Dr Oura said with this sharp rise in cases, the authorities will need to rethink their strategy and put things in place to reduce the transmission of the virus and stop it spreading, “otherwise it would carry on exponentially spreading…like we’re seeing in India now.”

With the more infectious Brazilian SARS-CoV-2 variant now in circulation, Dr Oura told GML Government should be looking very carefully at whether they should put in more strict measures.

He said “We know how to stop it and I’m afraid that is stricter lockdown measures. We know how to reduce the spread. We’ve done it in many cases before in many countries around the world so we know the situation is just better putting these measures in place.”
