Minister of National Security, Stuart Young, says the government is moving to have penalties increased for prison officers who are found guilty of accepting bribes and trafficking contraband.
Stuart was giving his contribution during debate on the Miscellaneous Provisions Law Enforcement Officers Bill 2019 in the House of Representatives, yesterday afternoon.
Minister Young said prison inmates who engage in illegal acts will also be targeted.
His statement comes over one month after a senior prison officer at the Maximum Security Prison was sent on on immediate leave. He was suspected of giving contraband to a prisoner.
