Steps Being Taken To Address Leafminer Pest, Assure Agriculture Ministry

Several steps are being taken to address the Leafminer pest.

The pest was first identified in Trinidad and Tobago in December 2021 in the counties St George East and West.

While the population is being described as relatively low, it is spread by the moving of wind, infected fruits, planting and packaging material.

Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, Avinash Singh, told the House of Representatives on Friday that plants and fruits affected by the pest are deemed unmarketable and can result in an eighty to one hundred percent yield loss to farmers.

According to Minister Singh this poses a great threat to the nation’s food production levels.
