A 25-year-old Army Private of Claxton Bay, who is assigned to Camp Ogden, St James, has been held for questioning following a fatal vehicular accident on Saturday, in which a female pedestrian was struck and killed while crossing the Priority Bus Route (PBR), Barataria
The victim has been identified as 77-year-old Doreen Charles of Moraldo Street, Maraval.
Reports are that soldier did not have permission to be on the PBR when the accident occurred around 8.30 am on Saturday.
Police said the soldier had been driving his black Hyundai Accent west along the PBR when upon reaching the pedestrian crossing at Third Avenue, he overtook a 25-seater maxi-taxi, which was stationary on the left side of the roadway.
Charles was at the time crossing in front of the maxi from the southern side of the road to the northern side when she was struck.
The police were contacted and Charles was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where she succumbed to her injuries a short while later.
Officers said Charles lived alone at Maraval and recently began exhibiting signs of senility.
However, she was known to frequent the home of a female relative at Seventh Street, Barataria.
The soldier was questioned and later issued a fixed penalty notice for Breach of PBR, and was also warned of potential prosecution.
