Several Roadways In Union Village Cleared Of Debris And Now Passable Following Protest

Several roadways in the Union Village, Rio Claro area are now cleared of debris and are now passable following alleged protest action this morning by interest groups.

At 4.30 am today, the Police Service received several reports of a road blockage along the Naparima Mayaro Road, Union Village, two blockages with debris and burning tires in Union Village, Rio Claro, and four blockages with burning tires, debris and fallen trees in the Union Village, Mayaro.

It immediately responded to the reports, where upon arrival at one of the locations, officers were met with a steel drill pipe across the roadway welded to a metal bridge with placards that read ‘NO WATER.’

There was a heavy traffic build up in the affected areas.

At 8.10 am, police officers, as well as personnel from the Rio Claro Fire Station and Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Cooperation extinguished the fires and removed the blockages and returned the areas to normalcy.

No protestors were seen at the scenes.
