Scrap Iron dealers still waiting for bill to be proclaimed

Scrap Iron Dealers are frustrated and wondering why the bill meant to regularize their industry is still unsigned.

Head of the Scrap Iron Dealers Association, Allan Ferguson, in a Newsday interview, stated that his members have been begging him to take to the streets, as they feel the government is not picking up for them because they are poor people.

He said that when he requested an update on the proclamation of the act, it had not yet been signed.

Ferguson revealed that a large percentage of the industry is still closed down, with only a few yards and a few scrap iron dealers operating. However, he said these dealers are taking on heavy risk as, with the industry closed down, scrap iron is being traded at a fraction of the price it was sold at before the ban.

Legislative framework to regulate the industry is still waiting to be fully proclaimed by the president.
