Rishi Sunak to be Britain’s youngest PM in more than a century

42 year old British MP Rishi Sunak is set to become Britain’s first Asian Prime Minister and the youngest in more than a century.

Sunak won the race for the job after his lone remaining contender, Penny Mordaunt, dropped out of the Conservative Party leadership race just minutes before the deadline for nominations was closed.

Sunak will succeed Liz Truss seven weeks after she defeated him in the previous leadership contest.

The ex-chancellor gained the support of well over half of his party’s MPs, with Mordaunt struggling to reach the threshold of 100 MPs to get on the ballot

It has not yet been confirmed when he will formally become prime minister.

The King will appoint Mr Sunak, who will take over from Ms Truss following her resignation just 45 days into her tumultuous premiership last week.
