Regulatory board needed for mentally health institutions

The treatment of the 69 persons who were housed at the Transform Life Ministry (TLM) may have been a violation of the Mental Health Act.

During a press conference held at the Police Administration Headquarters this afternoon, former policeman turned lawyer Christian Chance said one of the things that must be considered is if TLM was an approved home to house the mentally unstable. He said the Mental Health Acts sets out how to treat with mentally ill people and what must happen if the law is broken.

He said a regulatory body must be created with oversight capabilities to treat with the issues that are raised by those who are housed at these institutions. Chance said institutions such as St. Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital is oversubscribed and calls for the need for approved facilities.
