Regional Corporations Lacking Funding Claims An Opposition MP

A call is made on the Minister of Local Government to release essential and much-needed funds for Regional Corporations to be able to do their job.

The appeal comes from Member of Parliament for St. Augustine and the Opposition’s Shadow Minister for Local Government Khadijah Ameen.

MP Ameen made the request while speaking at the UNC’s Virtual Report on Monday.

The Opposition MP claimed because there is suppression and lack of funding, regional corporations cannot carry out infrastructural improvements, clearing of water courses and even paying employees.

MP Ameen said in some corporations, employees have been retrenched due to lack of funds.

The Opposition MP said disaster management teams are unable to respond to any disaster especially over the weekend when the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation did not even have money to buy diesel for needed equipment.

MP Ameen said the Couva/Talparo/Tabaquite Regional Corporation did not even have the finds to purchase wooden planks to repair wood bridges after the flooding.
