Referees “not selected” after Man Utd penalty error

Three Premier League referees who officiated Manchester United’s game against Wolves yesterday will miss next week’s matches after they controversially failed to award a penalty to Wolves in the dying minutes of the game.

Wolves were denied a late penalty on Monday when United keeper Andre Onana crashed into a Wolves player and failed to make contact with the ball.

United went on to win the game 1-nil.

The head of referees, Howard Webb, contacted Wolves officials after the match to apologise while elite referees’ manager Jon Moss has reportedly said that he “could not believe” the error.

The decision not to select the referees is part of the Premier League refereeing body’s insistence on enhanced accountability for mistakes.
