Criminologist Professor Ramesh Deosaran says judging from the views of the public and other stakeholders the police service is not in control of crime and the TTPS must admit its failings.
He said that murders, home invasions and extortion has risen sharply and that cannot be ignored or denied.
During a TTPS news conference last week Deputy Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin said that serious reports of crime were down this year by an estimated 16% when compared to the comparative period in 2023.
However he admitted that this was overshadowed by the high murder rate.
He claimed that this was not a situation where crime is out of control and that the police service was very much in control of crime.
However Professor Deosaran told the Power Breakfast Show this morning that citizens are terrified.
He revealed that the Police Commissioner should face consequences for not fulfilling her mandate to use the service to arrest crime.
He questioned the role of the media with reference to crime in relation to the authorities and public response.
Professor Deosaran said that he believed that the media was being manipulated.
He said that there is evidence that the media seems more interested in big headlines than taking the authorities to task by probing for real answers.
