R-Kelly’s lawyer gives insight into star’s prison conditions

One of R Kelly’s lawyers has given the public some insight into the conditions the R&B star has faced in prison.

Many were unsure if Kelly would be given preferntial treatment in prison given his superstar status but according to attorney Michael Leonard, the singer turned accused sex trafficker is facing a very different lifestyle to the one he had become accustomed to.

Leonard revealed that Kelly has spent the majority of his time in the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Chicago where he is only allowed out of his 8×10, two-person cell for a few hours day to check his email, talk to his lawyers, make phone calls, shower and eat, with no access to the rooftop basketball court that is typically available during non-COVID times.

Leonard said that COVID has made conditions even worse as Kelly can’t hang out in the dormitory-style areas of the prison where in non-COVID times he might have had more contact with fellow inmates.

But despite a spell in a segregated unit after another inmate attacked him last year, Leonard said that Kelly had generally been treated “very well” and respected by his other fellow prisoners.
