Pulchan calls on powers that be to reduce prison population

With prison cells at capacity and a virus slowly spreading, Prisons Commissioner (Ag) Dennis Pulchan, is once again calling for urgent intervention to reduce the prison population.

On Saturday, it was revealed that 68 prisoners at the Maximum Security Prison (MSP) in Arouca had tested positive for the virus.

Speaking to TV6, Pulchan described the situation as “an unsettling one”, but said it appears to be under control and they have no severe cases.

With five or more inmates in a cell made for three, Pulchan is now hoping that the powers that be will take this opportunity to reduce the prison population.

Pulchan said for years they have been speaking of non-custodial sentences, a parole system, electrical monitoring, and other options that are available to the judiciary that can easily help them to reduce the prison population to a manageable amount.

Pulchan said the prison officers are also concerned but so far they have spoken to the inmates and assured them that all that needs to be done is being done.
