Public told to respect turtles nesting sites as nesting season begins

The public is being warned to respect and avoid turtle nesting sites along the country’s beaches this nesting season.

The annual turtle nesting season in Trinidad and Tobago has begun, and citizens have been told that unless they are in possession of the relevant permits, they will not be allowed on the site, unless under the guidance of conservation guides.

Las Cuevas Eco Friendly Association Tours has also warned the public not to drive or light bonfires on the beach, or disturb nesting turtles.

The Grande Riviere Nature Tour Guides Association has also advised that permits are required for visits to Grande Riviera Beach, a known turtle nesting site, during nesting season between 6pm-6am.

Leatherback nesting season occurs in Trinidad and Tobago from March to the end of August each year.

The penalty for causing injury or harm to sea turtles is a fine of $100,000 and a two-year jail term under the country’s environmental conservation laws.

Conservation group Nature Seekers said it has already recorded turtles nesting in Matura.

For information on permits contact the Ministry of Agriculture Lands and Fisheries Forestry Division offices.
