Prof Selwyn Cudjoe: Repatriation process flawed

Renowned T&T historian Professor Selwyn Cudjoe has been out of T&T since just before the Covid 19 pandemic started. He says by now the process for repatriation of citizens should have been more transparent and efficient .

He said while the PNM did a very good job at the start of the pandemic in controlling the spread of the virus, at this point the system needs to be much more democratic. He said that benchmarks should be able to tell the population if , how and when they will be able to get home.

Minister of National Security Stuart Young indicated in the Senate on March 02nd, 2021, that as at February 2021 1673 persons had been out of T&T for more than six months.

The minister added that the number of persons awaiting repatriation for between three to six months was 3531. The ministry of National Security launched an online portal to process repatriation requests on November 15th ,2020.
