Prisons officers hospitalised following attack by inmates

Two Prisons Officers are currently nursing injuries they sustained following an attack by prisoners, housed in the Top Security area at the Remand Facility.

The incident occurred around 7.20am on Wednesday during the feeding exercise, the prisons service said via a press release.

Sources say the officers tried to stop an altercation that occurred around that time, but the prisoners instead attacked the officers. One of the officers had to undergo a CAT scan following the incident.

Other officers in the vicinity, as well as the Emergency Response Unit, responded to quell the situation, and the injured officers were rushed to the hospital.

The initial cause of the attack on the officers is yet to be determined.

Commissioner of Prisons (Ag), Mr. Dennis Pulchan has launched an immediate investigation into the matter. He has condemned the attack and expressed that his concern is that of the state of his officers, one of whom has to undergo a CAT scan as a result of the blow he received to his head.

The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, despite its challenges, continues to do its part in the maintenance of security by utilizing feasible measures available.
