Police have launched an investigation into the death of an inmate who was detained at the Maximum Security Prison (MSP) at Golden Grove, Arouca.
On Tuesday morning, Carlos Lawrence told prison officers that he was ill. Two prison officers took him to the Arima District Hospital, but Lawrence died moments after arrival. The prison officers were questioned by police who do not suspect foul play in Lawrence’s death since he had a pre-existing medical condition of an abdominal hernia. There were also no marks of violence on his body.
His body was taken to the Forensic Sciences Complex in St.James where an autopsy is expected to be performed.
Lawrence was remanded to MSP for possession of a firearm and ammunition.
