Prison Officers request meeting with PM as murders linked to high profile prisoner

Head of the Prison officers Association, Cerron Richards is requesting a meeting with Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley in light of two officers being gunned down within four days of each other.

Nigel Jones of Los Bajos, Santa Flora was gunned down in broad daylight in front of his young daughter at the Fyzabad taxi stand in Siparia.

His colleague, Prisons Officer II Trevor Serrette, was killed in Valencia on Friday conducting business at his fruit and vegetable stall.

Both men were last assigned to the same wing at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca.

Media reports say a high-profile prisoner housed at the prison ordered the hits.

Mr Richards described the murders as an attack on national security noting that attacks on prison officers has been an ongoing issue.

Mr Richards said in an interview on Power 102 Digital that he is not interested in meeting with the National Security Minister as this situation now needs the direct intervention of the Prime Minister, who also sits as the head of the National Security Council.

The Prison Officers Association is set to have had a press conference this morning to address the issue.
