Prison Officer found with contraband granted bail

On Monday 2nd September 2024, a Prison Officer appeared virtually before Master Shabiki Cazabon in the Masters Court North-B and was granted $25,000 own bail, with the condition that he is to reside at his St Joseph address.

Prison Officer 1 (PO1) Isaiah Llewellyn , was arrested on Friday 30th August, 2024, at the Port of Spain Prison, Frederick Street, Port of Spain.

After conducting further enquiries and interviewing several persons, the accused was formally charged with the offence of Being in Possession of Prohibited Articles to wit, 20 Broadway Extra cigarettes without having the express authorization of the Commissioner of Prisons.

The matter was adjourned to 3rd October 2024 for the charge to be read and for case management.
According to police reports, officers received instructions from Deputy Commissioner of Police Intelligence and Investigations Ms. Suzette Martin, and proceeded to the Frederick Street Prison, Port of Spain.

Between 2:15 pm and 5 pm on Friday 30th August, 2024, the officers conducted an intelligence-led exercise at the prison, alongside the prison personnel. Checks were carried out in restricted areas of the prison and in keeping with Section 178 of the Prisons Ordinance, Chapter 11, No. 7, a search was conducted on the person of a Prison Officer 1.

During the search one flattened Lucky Strike cigarette pack containing 20 flattened Broadway Extra branded cigarettes were allegedly found; same without the expressed authorization of the Commissioner of Prisons.

Further searches were conducted and two packs of Lucky Strike cigarettes, one containing 20 cigarettes and the other containing nine were also found. The Prison Officer was told of the offence committed and he was detained pending further enquiries.

DCP Suzette Martin stated, “The TTPS and the Prison Service will continue to collaborate in treating with criminal activities, we will utilize our intelligence apparatus to conduct pinpoint strategic exercises to disrupt criminal activities.

We will continue to work diligently and collaborate with our law enforcement partners to ensure that all those involved in illegal activities, whether inside or outside of the prison walls, are brought to justice”.

Insp. Telesford, Cpl Seechan, Ag./Cpl Williams, W/Ag./Cpl Harry, PC Mitchell, PC Jagram and PC Bristol of the Operations Unit conducted the exercise.
