Prime Minister Tells Parliament, Initial Budget Request Amounted To $76 Billion

A calculation of the various budget requests by government ministries would have pushed the overall national budget request to 76 billion dollars.

However, Prime Minister, Dr Keith Rowley, said the government does not have this amount of money to carry out the country’s business.

The national budget for this year is 56 billion dollars.

One and a half billion dollars of this overall amount has to be borrowed.

Speaking during the Budget Debate in the parliament Tuesday afternoon, Dr Rowley said 13 billion dollars was borrowed by the government during the covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Rowley said the government is about ensuring citizens receive value for money in these tough economic times.

The Prime Minister also responded to a media release from the Opposition Leader relating to what was described as the hosting of a lavish party for the Prime Minister and his friends.

Dr Rowley said he was invited to a function hosted by a private company.
