Police shoot man during standoff in Woodbrook, suspect now hospitalised

A 36-year-old man is warded at the Port of Spain General Hospital with gunshot injuries, which he sustained during a confrontation with police on Sunday.

Reports are that at around 7am, officers were responding to a report of a man breaking into a vehicle along Woodford Street, Newtown.

Upon arrival, officers observed a man who fit the description of the suspect walking on the roadway.

When the officers shouted for the man to stop, he attempted to flee the scene.
Police caught up with the man at a car park along Buller Street, however, the suspect, was brandishing a weapon in his hand.

Officers asked the suspect to surrender his weapon, but he then pointed the gun at the officers, who in turn opened fire on the suspect.

The man was hitting in the left leg and left hand.

The weapon was recovered on the scene.
