Police say items found in south not identified as “warheads”

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is now saying that the items found in South Trinidad on Sunday are in fact not warheads.

Around 7:00 pm on Sunday 22nd September police officers responded to a report of suspected ‘military warheads’ found by members of the public at Mosquito Creek, Oropouche.

Officers of the Southern, South Western Divisions and Coastal and Air Support Unit led by ACP Wayne Mystar, visited the scene and discovered several “cylindrical projectiles” amongst the rocks on the banks of the Godineau River in the vicinity of the Godineau Bridge at Mosquito Creek, Oropouche.

In a statement Tuesday, the TTPS said whilst the items did appear similar to military munitions, a team of specialists from the TTPS Explosive Detection and Disposal Unit “Bomb Squad” with the assistance of international partners, further examined the objects and they were positively identified to be parts belonging to concrete piercing tools used in the construction industry.

It said, however, a number of major components for the functioning of the items were not present and in the interest of public safety, the items were seized and removed from the site.

Further investigations are being conducted.
