Police continue investigations into kidnapping

A 2 million dollar ransom demand was made for a Siparia couple who police believe was kidnapped in Piarco on Saturday evening one of who is said to have escaped his captors.
Sixty two year old Narine Maraj and retired auto mechanic and his wife fifty two year old Mattie Maraj.
The two went missing after leaving their Madrass Road home to visit a farm they owned in Piarco.
According to police reports approximately one hour after they left one of their four children received a telephone call from Narine’s phone from an unknown male demanding a $2 million payment for the safe return of their parents.
Officers said the couple left their home at around 5:30 pm in a silver coloured Ford Focus car to check on their animals and property in Piarco.
Their family members received the phone call at approximately 6:35 pm.
A report was subsequently made to the police.
Reports indicate that police conducted an exercise in Oropune Arouca on Sunday based on intel they received at 12:05 on Sunday morning however the couple was not located.
Reports also indicated yesterday evening that Mr Narine had escaped his kidnappers however his wife remained detained.
Police has asked anyone with information on the kidnapping to call 800 – TIPS or contact the nearest police station.
