Police Constable Granted $50,000 Bail For Corruption Charges

A Police Constable, last attached to the Barrackpore Police Station, was granted fifty thousand dollars station bail with surety, after being charged with two counts of corruption.

PC Myron Babwah was arrested following a sting operation by officers of the Professional Standards Bureau conducted at the Barrackpore Police Station on February 24th this year.

He was granted station bail on February 28th and the matter adjourned to April 5th.

PC Babwah was charged with the following offences, by Acting ASP Steve McKenzie of the PSB, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC.

PC Babwah allegedly corruptly attempted to obtain for himself, the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars, contrary to Section 4(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

It is also alleged PC Babwah corruptly obtained for himself the sum of one thousand five hundred dollars contrary to Section 4(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

On February 19th, the motor vehicle in question was brought to the Barrackpore Police Station pending a criminal investigation.

On February 24th, a police officer allegedly contacted the victim, who is the owner of the said vehicle and requested the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars to release the said vehicle to him.

 

 

On that same date, a sting operation was conducted by officers of the PSB at the Barrackpore Police Station, where the officer met the victim and allegedly accepted one thousand, five hundred dollars to secure the release of the vehicle into his care and custody.

Officers of the PSB subsequently arrested the officer in connection with the incident.
