Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith said that in the next few weeks, the police service will launch a coastal patrol unit that will monitor the Western and Southern peninsulas.
He said the initiative will be launched in the next few weeks and is only one of several measures implemented to keep T&T’s borders safe.
Griffith said the border protection unit will include the assistance of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) working in tandem with the police service.
One of the main reasons for the unit is that illegal weapons are still coming through the legal ports of entry.
He said they are also trying to weed out the corrupted elements who bring in illegal guns and promote human trafficking.
