Police await autopsy on death of 11 month old

An autopsy is to be conducted on an 11-month-old baby girl who suffocated and died after being fed mashed potato by her Godmother last week.

Police reports indicate at around 5 pm last Tuesday (September 6), Carmen Gonzales, 43, of Eastern Main Road, Manzanilla, was at home babysitting the 11-month-old whilst the child’s mother Elena Rosal, 28, was at work in Sangre Grande. All three are Venezuelan nationals.

Gonzales told police she was feeding the child when she began choking on the food. Gonzales called for assistance and the landlords came to her aid and contacted the Emergency Health Services. Emergency Medical Technicians reportedly gave the woman guidance over the phone on what to do until they arrived. However, EMTs were unable to resuscitate when they arrived on the scene.

Officers from the Manzanilla Police Station, was contacted and later examined the body, made a pronouncement and ordered its removal to the Sangre Grande Mortuary, pending a post-mortem at the Mt Hope Medical Sciences Complex.

Police are now waiting on the results of the autopsy as investigations continue.
