PM: Violence can be classed as a public health emergency

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley and Lead Head with responsibility for Crime and Security addressed the Regional Symposium on day one on the issue of ‘Violence as a Public Health Issue’

The Symposium was held at the Hyatt Regency, on Monday 17th April, 2023.

Dr Rowley in his speech said, “our current laws acknowledge a suite of afflictions, Yellow fever, Smallpox, Plague, Cholera, Ebola, Novel Coronavirus as notifiable, warranting emergency responses if even only a few cases are known to appear.”

“Violent behaviour, violent crime, violent crime involving the use of firearms, the associated individual and group mental health trauma accompanying violent behaviour, so ever-present amongst us now, pose a far greater destructive threat than these diseases and on that basis alone qualifies violence as a public health emergency.”
