Acting Prisons Commissioner, Deopersad Ramoutar, says there are plans to expand the rehabilitation programme in the prison system.
Mr Ramoutar said focus will be placed on developing positive mind set among inmates.
They will also be exposed to life skills which will put them in a better position to get a job when they are reintegrated into society.
Mr Ramoutar said the government of Trinidad and Tobago has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Canadian government in which prison expertise there will be shared with local prison officials and programme adopted where necessary.
Mr Ramoutar also noted the importance of family values and why this aspect is significant.
