Pennelope Beckles Ready To Take On New Role As Planning And Development Minister

The government is seeking to accelerate and deepen efforts to build a new post-pandemic society that is healthier, safer, more equitable, and increasingly resilient, with more opportunities for prosperity.

This is one of the commitments indicated by newly appointed Minister of Planning and Development, Pennelope Beckles.

Minister Beckles takes up the mantle from Camille Robinson Regis who is now the Minister of Housing and Urban Development coming out of last week’s cabinet reshuffle.

Minister Beckles, on the first day on the job, met with the Executive and staff of various divisions within the Ministry.

In a media release Monday afternoon, Minister Beckles said, in the area of innovation, the creation of an enabling environment for the private sector and entrepreneurs to confidently invest and take risks will remain a key component of post-pandemic recovery efforts.

Minister Beckles said likewise, the adoption of innovative, technology-driven means of mitigating the challenges faced in areas such as climate change, non-communicable diseases, renewable energy, and energy efficiency will continue to be encouraged and advanced.

With respect to the Port of Spain Revitalization Project, Minister Beckles said this also reflects the commitment to support the COVID-19 recovery process as highlighted in the Road to Recovery policy, which articulates goals focused on rebuilding lives and livelihoods, creating a digital nation, improving public health and building climate and environmental resilience among others.
