Partial Local Government Reform Increases Tenure To Four Years; Elections Now Expected December 2023

Cabinet has approved the partial proclamation of the local government reform package as to specific sections.

They include provisions inside of the Municipal Corporation Act Section 11 and 12 which deal with the life and term of local government representatives such as councillors and aldermen.

Under the law the life councillors and aldermen prior to the passage of the local government reform was three years.

However, the reformed law has increased it to four years.

Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Faris Al Rawi, made the disclosure while speaking at the weekly post cabinet news briefing on Thursday.

Minister Al Rawi said with the proclamation of the law the life of the councillors and aldermen will now go until 2023.
