Parents Association asks TTUTA to think of the children and recall the “day of rest and reflection”

For the sake of the children, please find some other way.

That’s essentially the call being made by Kevin David, president of the National Parent-Teacher Association (NPTA) as teachers prepare for a day of rest and reflection on the first day of school on Monday following government’s offer of a 4 percent increase in salaries – which TTUTA has since rejected.

David is asking teachers to find some other way to get the desired results in their negotiations with the Chief Personnel Officer (CPO), so that children would not missing out on learning.

David, in a Newsday report, said, “Our parents are very angry. While the NPTA is quite aware of the importance of wages and negotiations, it is a very troubling time for all our parents, but more so for our children when they are recovering from two years of learning loss.

“Teachers play a critical part in this learning recovery so we do need our teachers in the classroom.”

David also expressed concerns about the lack of infrastructure work or the late start of such work in certain schools and the removal of the mask mandate in schools.

He said such a move ran the risk of those on the school compound getting sick.

“While it was very difficult for many of our students to wear that mask during the entire day, we plead with our parents to ensure their children adhere to the guidelines of staying apart and no sharing (of) items.”

He also asked parents to keep children at home if they have flu-like symptoms, even if it was not covid19, so any virus would not spread to other students which may lead to a school being closed.
