Parallel health care system at 15% capacity as more Trinis expected home next week

Although more Trinidad and Tobago nationals continue to be repatriated, Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards, Principal Medical Officer at the Ministry of Health said that the overall capacity within the parallel health care system is only at 15%.

Speaking at a Ministry of Health press conference on Wednesday, Dr. Abdool-Richards said that the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity is at 11% which consists of three facilities: the Couva Medical and Multi-Training Facility, the Arima General Hospital and the Augustus Long Hospital.

She said the High Dependency Unit (HDU) capacity is at 23%, adding that there is significant room in both categories of care.

Dr. Abdool-Richards thanked all healthcare and essential workers who have assisted in the national response to Covid-19.

She also thanked the Ministry of National Security and all its entities as well as the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.
