Opposition raises conflict of interest in Presidential removal process

The Opposition is calling for the Speaker of the House and an independent Senator to recuse themselves from today’s meeting of the Electoral college at which the Parliament will vote on starting the process to remove President Paula-Mae Weekes from office.

Opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has suggested that Speaker of the House, Brigid Anisette-George is conflicted as she had drafted the 2009 Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Acting Appointments) (Selection Process) Order which was invalidated earlier this month after it was ruled to be in breach of the Constitution.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar also questioned whether Independent Senator Charrise Seepersad, sister of former PSC Chairman Bliss Seepersad, should be allowed to participate in the proceedings.
