Opposition Leader says No Need for SoE

The Government is yet to properly explain why there is a need for a continued State of Emergency in Trindad and Tobago.

This is according to Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley made a case for keeping the 9 pm to 5 am curfew and for extended the State of Emergency (SoE) by an additional three months.

He said that it was necessary to reduce movement and congregating that could trigger a third wave of the COVID-19 virus.

Speaking at the UNC’s Virtual Report last evening, she said the Prime Minister’s recent explanation that the SOE remains necessary because of the vaccination drive is confusing.

She said that the data and science did not in any way support a continued State of Emergency.

She maintained the Public Health Regulations already gives powers to carry out the safety measures.

Persad Bissessar said since the SOE makes no sense since there are Public Health measures which can be further amended to assist, then the real reason she said is that the Prime Minister wants control.
