Opposition concerned with Government’s handling of possible oil spill

Member of Parliament for Naparima Rodney Charles is calling on the Government to act with more urgency regarding the FSO Nabarima oil tanker which is said to be on the verge of sinking with 1.3 million barrels of oil on board.

Although Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne confirmed that a T&T team was sent to inspect a vessel and submit a report on its findings, Charles said waiting on a report at this stage can prove detrimental as time is of the essence.

Charles told Power 102 FM’s Power Breakfast Show that the Government does not seem to be acting with urgency in the matter.

He noted that several conversations should be had simultaneously in a bid to urgently address the situation.

This he noted includes a conversation with the US about T&T assisting Venezuela in moving the oil as this may contravene sanctions

In response, Youth Development Minister Fitzgerald Hinds suggested that Charles is behind the curve in his comments.

Hinds also said that the Government was aware of the situation regarding the oil tanker prior to Gary Aboud highlighting it on social media.
